About

Hi, I’m James Courtney. I’m a Darwin-based disability support worker and communications and technology consultant with more than 20 years’ experience.

Since 2010, much of my paid and voluntary work has been in the disability sector. I have worked with participants, families and some of the Northern Territory’s largest disability and community-service organisations.

My driving interest is the positive, practical use of technology. I am particularly interested in accessible technology and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), and I continue to build my knowledge through hands-on experience and collaboration with participants, families and allied health professionals.

I support people to use technology for:

• communicating and expressing choices

• learning and developing new skills

• sharing ideas, feelings and opinions

• planning and staying organised

• creating and pursuing personal interests

• connecting safely with other people

• having fun

• becoming more confident and independent

My approach is practical, participant-led and built around the individual. I take time to understand each person’s interests, strengths, communication preferences and previous experiences. I then work with them to turn meaningful interests into opportunities to develop skills and independence.

I work directly with participants, families, carers, support coordinators and allied health professionals. I operate as an independent sole trader and unregistered NDIS provider, working with plan-managed and self-managed participants. I am fully insured and committed to providing safe, respectful and reliable support.

I am based in the Darwin suburb of Tiwi, where I live with my wife, teenage son, our little dog, seven chickens, two scrub fowl and an unknown number of bees, frogs, lizards and fish. I work with participants in the community and also use my home workspace for suitable technology and creative projects.
